Concert Diary 2006

Het Perron, Amsterdam - 20th April

Linda Simpson writes - We are now completely on 'tour time', getting to bed at 4am and getting up at about 11am - there is no other way to do it. Quite often we're still driving home at 2 or 3 am and if we normally went to bed at 11pm - we would be falling asleep on the road - not a good idea! So if you're thinking of giving us a call - best to leave it until after 11 am if possible.

The interior of Het Perron

When I started this diary I didn't realise how soon I would run out of adjectives - you can only have just so many 'lovely people', 'great places' and 'fantastic audiences' - but what can I do? That's how it is, and Het Perron is yet another wonderful place, with people to match.

The place belongs to Jane and her husband Govert. It is their own home, but Jane wanted to make the downstairs room into a music venue - it's a credit to her the way it has turned out and we loved every minute of our time there. The previous owner bought lots of art deco glass and mirror work which is utterly beautiful and featured, not only in the concert room but throughout the house - it looks particularly impressive on the staircase and I'm kicking myself for not taking a photograph of it.

It is no small venture; when they bought the place it was in need of a great deal of renovation and will no doubt take many years to finish it properly, but it is obviously a labour of love and one with which we have empathy because our own home is also taking time to pull together.

On the walls were some amazing photographs taken by Govert - his full name is Govert de Roos and his talent is exceptional - the Dutch probably know him well and I have yet to check the internet for more information about his work but I'm sure I'm going to find plenty to see and read.

Our star heckler...

Anyway, back to the concert, how could we fail in such surroundings? The atmosphere was 'ready made' by the place itself and all we had to do is fit in with it.

Thankyou to Fini and Little G for coming to look after the merchandise, Thankyou also to the mad chef, Roos and Lonneke, Tabby and her handsome chap and everyone else for coming along - it's nice to see new faces too - a perfect audience in fact.

We even had the perfect heckler, he was very funny, witty and charming - and had us all laughing at his quips about Dutch snacks, which once again involved balls - what is it with this tour? His name is Gijs Oudhof, and he apparently owns a bar on the Lindengracht-corner called 'de Gijs', which is worth a visit.

Sadly Matt couldn't be with us on this one, which is a shame because he would have loved it. Hopefully there will be another chance because we'd be honoured to play there again and it's more than possible that we will.

We have already told many people that places like Het Perron, The Candlelight theatre and Het Pand (still to come) are precious.

It takes a lot of time and effort to keep them going and this is done for little or no financial gain, in fact mainly it is done for the love of it. It is because of the people who have a passion for the performing arts that live music and theatre can grow; if any one of them has to close it is a great loss so please continue to support them.

That's my little speech over...

I can tell you that all three places mentioned are special in their own way and that, if I lived close by any of them I would certainly be a regular visitor.

We were sad to leave Het Perron that night but I'm happy to say that we are likely to go back - I'll take that 'photo of the staircase next time!!
